Rehabilitation at the clinic or at home — which to choose?

Choose home physiotherapy if the patient is bedridden, uses a wheelchair, has a high risk of falling on the way or has only just come home from hospital. Choose the clinic if the patient can travel without much difficulty and needs treatments that require equipment. At the “W zdrowym ciele” clinic manual therapy costs PLN 180, and a home visit approx. PLN 200 for up to 5 km, then PLN 2/km, within 15 km of Rydułtowy.

Below we compare both options in a table, describe the situations in which each works better and show sample costs. We also explain when you need to see a doctor first before rehabilitation.

In brief

  • Home visit: approx. PLN 200 for up to 5 km, then + PLN 2/km, within 15 km of Rydułtowy (including Rybnik and Wodzisław Śląski).
  • Clinic: consultation and manual therapy PLN 180 each, physical therapy modalities from PLN 15, ul. Strzelców Bytomskich 11.
  • Both options on working days, Mon–Fri 7:00–20:00; private visits only, not covered by NFZ (the Polish public health fund).
  • A mixed model is often best: start at home, then move to the clinic.
  • Sudden new neurological symptoms mean 112, not booking rehabilitation.

Rehabilitation at the clinic or at home — which is better?

Neither option is better for everyone. Three questions decide: can the patient get to the clinic safely, do they need treatments that require equipment, and do the main goals concern activities at home, e.g. getting out of bed or using the bathroom. With difficult travel and home-based goals, a home visit is better; in other situations, usually the clinic.

In practice, the choice often changes over time. A person after a stroke or hip surgery starts with home visits and, once they walk more confidently, moves to the clinic. On the other hand, a patient with back pain who drives themselves uses the clinic from the start.

How does rehabilitation at the clinic differ from home physiotherapy?

Rehabilitation at the clinic gives access to a treatment table and equipment for physical therapy treatments such as TECAR, shockwave therapy or laser. Home physiotherapy lets the patient exercise in their real surroundings, without travelling, and makes it easier to teach carers. Manual therapy at the clinic costs PLN 180, and a home visit approx. PLN 200 for up to 5 km, then PLN 2/km.

When is home physiotherapy better?

Home physiotherapy works well when the patient cannot safely leave their home: they are bedridden, use a wheelchair, have had a stroke, a fracture or surgery, live on an upper floor without a lift or tire quickly. It is also a good choice when the goal is independence in specific places in the home and carers need to learn how to help safely.

Typical situations:

Before the first visit, it is worth preparing free space by the bed, a stable chair and the medical records.

When is it better to come to the clinic?

The clinic is a better choice when the patient can travel without much difficulty and the therapy requires a treatment table or equipment: with back pain, joint injuries, tendon overload, heel spurs or tennis elbow. At the clinic it is also easier to progress the exercise load. The visit does not include the therapist’s travel costs, so it is cheaper than a home visit.

The clinic offers, among others, TECAR therapy (PLN 150, with manual therapy PLN 210), shockwave therapy (PLN 100) and physical therapy modalities such as magnetic therapy or TENS (PLN 15). For many people, simply leaving home for a visit is also part of getting back to activity.

How much does rehabilitation at the clinic and at home cost?

At the “W zdrowym ciele” clinic a consultation and manual therapy cost PLN 180 each, and physical therapy modalities from PLN 15. A home visit costs approx. PLN 200 for up to 5 km from Rydułtowy, then PLN 2 for each additional kilometre, e.g. approx. PLN 210 for 10 km. Can home and clinic visits be combined?

Yes, and it is often the most sensible solution. Therapy starts at home while the patient is still weak, and once walking and endurance improve, some visits move to the clinic. Home visits can also be combined with single clinic visits for treatments that require equipment. The plan is set by the physiotherapist after the consultation.

Moving from home to the clinic is a good sign of progress. The physiotherapist sets the number and frequency of visits, in either form, individually and adjusts them as the patient improves.

Good to know: when booking a home visit, give the exact address, the floor and whether there is a lift, and describe whether the patient is lying down, sitting or walking — the therapist then knows what equipment to bring.

When should you see a doctor first instead of starting rehabilitation?

Whatever the form of rehabilitation, you need to see a doctor first, and in emergencies call 112, if there are new neurological symptoms, chest pain or shortness of breath, fever, swelling of one calf, pain after a fall or a sudden decline in function. Physiotherapy is possible after a medical assessment and once treatment has been decided.

Warning symptoms:

  1. A drooping corner of the mouth, weakness in an arm or leg, speech problems — 112.
  2. Chest pain, shortness of breath, fainting — 112.
  3. Swelling, pain and redness of one calf — see a doctor urgently.
  4. A fall with hip pain or inability to put weight on the leg — a doctor or A&E (SOR, the hospital emergency department).
  5. Fever, sudden confusion, a rapid decline in function — see a doctor.

A neurologist in the area is listed in the Recommended specialists section.

Summary

Home physiotherapy is better for people who are bedridden, have just left hospital or have a high risk of falling, and the clinic for patients who can travel and need equipment. Manual therapy at the clinic costs PLN 180, and a home visit approx. PLN 200 for up to 5 km, then PLN 2/km, within 15 km of Rydułtowy.

Frequently asked questions

Do I need a referral for home physiotherapy?

A referral is usually not required for private home physiotherapy from the “W zdrowym ciele” clinic. Simply book a visit via Booksy or by phone on 505 417 624. It is worth preparing the hospital discharge summary, test results and a list of medicines, however, as they help plan safe therapy.

Is home physiotherapy available under the NFZ?

The NFZ funds rehabilitation at home for some patients, on the basis of a referral and usually with a waiting list. The “W zdrowym ciele” clinic has no contract with the NFZ and provides all visits, at the clinic and at home, privately only. A home visit costs approx. PLN 200 for up to 5 km, then PLN 2/km.

Does the physiotherapist travel to Rybnik and Wodzisław Śląski?

Yes, the clinic provides home physiotherapy within 15 km of Rydułtowy. This includes Rybnik, Wodzisław Śląski, Radlin, Pszów and towns and villages in the Wodzisław and Rybnik districts. When booking, give your exact address to confirm that it is within range and to find out the approximate price of the visit.

At what times can I book a visit?

The clinic is open Monday to Friday from 7:00 to 20:00, and home visits are booked within the same hours. The exact time is agreed when booking, taking into account mealtimes, medicine times and whether a carer is present. You can book a visit via Booksy or by phone on 505 417 624.

How do I cancel or reschedule a visit?

You can cancel or reschedule a visit via Booksy or by phone on 505 417 624. The cancellation rules are described on the “Appointment cancellation policy” page of the clinic’s website. For home visits, advance notice is especially important, as the therapist plans a route between several addresses.

What should I bring or prepare for the first visit?

For the first visit, at the clinic or at home, prepare your medical records: hospital discharge summaries, imaging reports, doctors’ recommendations and a list of medicines. Wear comfortable clothes and stable shoes. For a home visit, clear space around the bed and a chair and remove loose rugs from the patient’s path.
